78% of outsourced Qantas employees want to return to their old jobs – TWU
About 78% of outsourced Qantas workers wish to return to their old jobs at the airline company, according to a survey submitted by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) to the Australian Federal Court.
This comes after TWU won a landmark case against Qantas last July where the court ruled that the decision to outsource over 2,000 ground service workers was in partial violation of the Fair Work Act.
TWU National Secretary Michael Kaine said that despite everything that happened, the workers “want to put this awful period behind them and get back to doing their jobs safely and professionally.”
The union also created an open letter — signed by more than 3,000 former Qantas staff members and supporters — requesting the firm’s board to drop its appeal and immediately reinstate the ground workers.
The Federal Court will begin the reinstatement hearing on December 13. TWU has been requested to present three case studies about the personal effect of Qantas’ outsourcing decision and a survey detailing the preferred outcomes of the ground workers involved.
Since the initial ruling in July, Qantas has argued that it would be impractical and difficult to reinstate all outsourced workers back in their company.
