AI chatbots bolster productivity, efficiency — MIT study
MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES — A recent Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) study revealed that using generative AI chatbots in business communication helps improve productivity by 40% and quality by 18%.
The study was orchestrated by Shakked Noy and Whitney Zhang, MIT Ph.D. candidates, who engaged 453 participants for generalized writing assignments.
Following their first task, half of the participants were encouraged to use ChatGPT for their second assignment, with 80% taking up the tool. The tasks were then assessed by other professionals using a scoring system.
In a Forbes interview, Noy said, “When we first started playing with ChatGPT, it was clear that it was a new breakthrough, unlike anything we’ve seen before… And it was pretty clear that it was going to have some kind of labor market impact.”
The study also highlighted that AI could rapidly generate first drafts, attributing the quality increase to ChatGPT’s excellent writing ability for straightforward tasks.
However, the research did not factor in time for fact-checking, citing it as a limitation.
Generative AI’s potential in the future of work has sparked significant interest, with McKinsey predicting it could add between US$2.6 trillion and US$4.4 trillion in value annually to the global economy.
Regarding the future impact of AI, Noy stated that it’s too early to tell what it will do and how it will affect the economy.
