Apple joins big-tech layoffs
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Tech giant Apple has joined other big-tech firms in laying off some of their employees.
In a note sent to employees, the iPhone maker said the layoffs would be focused on workers involved in the “construction and upkeep” of their retail locations and other physical facilities.
Apple added that the move was intended to improve store upkeep. Affected employees are also urged to reapply for other roles within the company. Those not accepted for new roles will receive four months of severance pay.
The announcement comes as Apple started implementing a strict hybrid work arrangement, where employees must come to the office three days per week.
Apple CEO Tim Cook described in-office collaboration as a “cornerstone” of the company’s work culture.
The tech giant is reportedly tracking employee badge records and issuing escalating warnings to employees who are not following their hybrid work mandate.
Three years after going on hiring sprees, several tech firms have laid off workers, including Amazon, Microsoft, Google, IBM, Zoom, and Cisco.
