CAIRO, EGYPT — Software development emerged as the most in-demand job category In Egypt‘s rapidly evolving information and communication technology (ICT) sector.

According to a report by the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA), this surge is driven by the country’s strategic initiatives to foster a strong digital economy and the increasing global demand for innovative software solutions.

Software development dominates Egypt’s job openings

According to ITIDA’s findings, software development roles—including full-stack developers, software testers, and cloud engineers—account for 58.90% of the 3,200 job vacancies presented by IT companies in Egypt.

Job vacancies in IT management came second with 9.39% of the job market. This is followed closely by jobs in artificial intelligence and data science, with 9.35%.

IT infrastructure roles are also prominent, comprising 7.56% of the job offers.

Meanwhile, security in the digital realm is not left behind, with information security positions accounting for 4.41%, followed by data analysis at 3.69%, and digital arts at 3.19%.

Telecommunications engineering and research and development roles are also on the list, accounting for 2.37% and 1.15% of job openings in the country, respectively.

High demand for multilingual skills

The language skills required by the Egyptian job market are also diverse. English leads at 49% of the jobs, followed by German at 24%, French at 14%, and Italian at 13%.

These statistics highlight the multilingual capabilities sought in the call center and business process outsourcing (BPO) sectors.

ITIDA affirms its commitment to talent and diversity

ITIDA’s report is based on the outcomes of two ITIDA Employment Fairs held between October 2023 and March 2024.

Engineer Ahmed ELZaher, CEO of ITIDA, said, “The increased diversity of participating companies in ITIDA’s job fairs reflects the industry’s promising trajectory and the array of job opportunities available.”

He further stressed the inclusivity of the IT sector, which welcomes candidates beyond the traditional Engineering and Computer Science backgrounds.

ITIDA’s strategic growth and export goals for Egypt

ElZaher added that “doubling Egypt’s digital exports” is a priority in ITIDA’s agenda.

He also noted Egypt’s offshoring industry’s 54% growth last year, driven by the entry of new multinational corporations and the expansion of existing ones within the Egyptian market.

Last February, ITIDA organized a roundtable discussion on how to boost Egyptian IT and software firms on the global stage.

The event convened industry leaders to talk about the adoption of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) to improve business performance and create a sustainable competitive edge.

The discussion also touched on ITIDA’s efforts to boost the number of accredited IT companies in Egypt. This includes a partnership with the Software Engineering Competence Center (SECC) and the Chamber of Information and Communication Technology (CIT), where CIT will cover half the certification costs for 20 of its member companies to achieve CMMI certification.
