DTI, PEZA seek to lift new BPOs ban in NCR
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Ramon Lopez III is pushing for the lifting of locational investment restrictions, including business process outsourcing (BPO) operations in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Additionally, investments promotions agency Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), which is also chaired by Lopez, is preparing for a new letter urging the president to lift the moratorium on the establishment of new BPO operations in Metro Manila.
The letter will use the Corporate Recovery and Tax Incentives for Enterprises Act (CREATE) Law as basis in the lifting of the moratorium.
Further, PEZA Deputy Director General Tereso Panga said that while the agency has no concrete data on the impact of the moratorium, the IT-Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP) pointed to job loss of 40,000-50,000 BPO seats in the NCR.
