Google to cut salaries of remote employees
Google has launched a new internal calculator tool to determine the potential pay cuts for its remote employees.
According to screenshots obtained by Reuters, employees could experience salary cuts ranging from 5-25% depending on the area where they are currently living.
News of the new tool launched by the global firm comes amid a big debate at tech companies about remote work and compensation.
In an interview with Reuters, Washington University sociology professor Jake Rosenfeld said Google’s pay structure raises alarms about who will feel the impacts most acutely, including families.
Rosenfeld added that “Google has paid these workers at 100 percent of their prior wage, by definition. So it’s not like they can’t afford to pay their workers who choose to work remotely the same that they are used to receiving.”
A Google spokesperson has commented that their compensation packages “have always been determined by location, and we always pay at the top of the local market based on where an employee works from.”
