Google to invest $9.9Mn to upskill women

Tech giant Google will be investing US$9.9 million to help develop the digital skills of women in Mexico. As many as 2,300 women are expected to benefit from this program that will run for the next three years.

According to the International Youth Foundation, a nonprofit which will manage the funds provided by Google, this initiative will help increase job opportunities for women, particularly those living in the country’s southeastern region.

The funds are in addition to the US$2 million that Google had already committed to another training initiative for women residing in the southeastern states of Tabasco, Yucatán, and Quintana Roo.

Google’s Director of Communications in Spanish-speaking Latin America Florencia Sabatini said that this is the company’s biggest ever investment in training women in the digital technology industry.

The announcement came two months after the United States government launched a new US$30 million employment and sustainability program for seven states in Mexico’s south and southeast.

The Mexican government is also investing billions of dollars in the region to spur economic development, mainly via large infrastructure projects.
