Indian gov’t to allow WFH in SEZs
The Indian government is officially allowing firms operating from special economic zones to implement work-from-home (WFH) arrangement.
According to Union Commerce Minister, Piyush Goyal, the Indian government decided on granting SEZ firms’ plea to allow them to implement WFH.
Goyal said that the approval is expected to boost employment opportunities in small cities.
“We’ve decided to allow Work From Home (WFH) in all SEZ sectors as a request for it has come from many quarters. It’ll create employment opportunities in small cities and increase export services.” Goyal mentioned this during his attendance at the Board of Trade meeting in Delhi.
In July, the ministry had advised regulations to grant 50% of employees under the Special Economic Zones Sectors to work remotely for up to a year, subject to change depending on pertinent factors. The setup will mostly benefit those working in the IT and ITeS sector, among others.
Meanwhile, service exports hit $254 billion during the first year of 2022, and the Indian government anticipates its growth further in the fiscal year.
