Jamaican BPO exec slams poor working condition allegations
Claude Duncan, Country Manager and Associate VP for outsourcing provider Sutherland Global Services, is speaking out against claims of poor employee treatment in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry across Jamaica.
In an interview with Jamaica Observer, Duncan said that the working conditions of the outsourcing industry are far different from a sweatshop.
“If you look at Sutherland and you look at the things online, the employees speak for themselves. We have over 8,000 employees, and the industry has 40,000…”
He emphasized that it is “a bit ridiculous” to focus on “one or two persons” who speak badly towards the sector.
The Sutherland executive’s view came one week after the Observer reported the complaints of some BPO employees. The report said that the industry causes mental health deterioration due to poor working conditions and random salary alterations.
Duncan argues that employees usually leave their jobs due to poor leadership and not it’s working environment.
