Jamaicans urged to enter the BPO industry
Government officials in Jamaica are urging the local citizens to grow their careers in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, as the sector is expected to expand in the country over the next few years.
In an interview with JIS News, Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) President Diane Edwards said that they are expecting over 50,000 BPO jobs moved from Asia to the nearshore, and once Jamaica plays their part right “we can take a lot of those jobs.”
Meanwhile, Global Services Association of Jamaica (GSAJ) President Gloria Henry stated that the industry is moving towards generating 50,000 jobs with an estimated US$1 billion in annual revenues.
Henry added that the outsourcing industry “has the largest ratio of employees to supervisors, it supports growth from within, so anybody who is looking for a career, this is the place to go.
The GSAJ President disclosed that they are partnering with HEART/NTSA Trustin training 24,000 people to meet the expansion.
There are currently over 44,000 BPO employees in the country as of June 2021, compared to 2020’s 38,400.
BPO firms are working alongside the Jamaica Special Economic Zone Authority, while the Government is in the process of passing a legislation that would allow 30 to 40% of the workforce to work remotely on a regular basis.
