Marcos pushes ‘skills diversification’ of Filipino workers
Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is urging employers and labor stakeholders to diversify Filipino workers’ skills.
“‘Yung (The) micro-credentials, it’s not a four-year course. It’s not a degree. But you can present this to qualify for a job,” Marcos said during his meeting with members of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) last week.
Citing offshore medical staff in the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry as an example, Marcos said that workers should have skills-focused qualifications.
“It’s really skills training. We have to upskill everybody. We need to have a system that will work with everyone,” he said, adding there are 16 Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda)-accredited innovation centers offering such training.
Marcos said that trainings for “micro-credentials” or skills-focused qualifications are similar to those offered by Tesda.
“PSAC agreed and is in full support of the government’s drive in upskilling, reskilling our own talents, and retooling the education system,” said Go Negosyo founder and Job Sector Lead Jose Maria “Joey” Concepcion III.
