Online attacks to PH firms up 29% in 2022
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — Web attacks targeting organizations in the Philippines increased by 22% in 2022, said global cybersecurity firm Kaspersky.
In its latest report, Kaspersky revealed that web-based threats in the country increased from 382,940 in 2021 to 492,567 last year.
“Last year was a period of reopening for most businesses in Southeast Asia and, unfortunately, so as for cybercriminals,” said Kaspersky Southeast Asia General Manager Yeo Siang Tiong.
For the whole region, the cybersecurity giant revealed that it blocked 13.34 million web attacks from infecting businesses in 2022, up 45.3% from the 9.18 million web attacks recorded in 2021.
Singapore logged the highest year-on-year jump, followed by Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. On the other hand, Vietnam declined by 12% to 2.49 million.
Kaspersky identified human and technical errors as the two main weaknesses of businesses that lead to successful online attacks.
To address this, the security company said businesses should have consistent incident investigation and response processes.
Yeo also urged businesses to explore other comprehensive solutions — such as outsourcing — to bridge the talent gap in the IT security industry.
