OpenAI CEO calls remote work a mistake
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman believes that the tech industry’s move towards full-time remote work has been a mistake, particularly for startups.
Speaking at a recent event hosted by fintech company Stripe, Altman stated that while remote work may be just as productive as in-person work, it harms employees’ career prospects and limits creativity.
“I would say that the experiment on that is over, and the technology is not yet good enough that people can be full remote forever, particularly on startups,” he added.
Altman emphasized the importance of in-person collaboration, particularly for more complex and nuanced ideas.
Altman’s position is not unique, as other CEOs have demanded that remote employees spend more time in the office.
However, many employees remain firm in their preference for remote work. A recent survey by market research firm Pew Research found that 56% of professionals believed remote work helps them finish their work and meet deadlines.
