PH COVID-19 infections reaches 2M
The total COVID-19 infections in the Philippines reached over two million after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 14,216 more cases on Wednesday, September 1.
According to the latest DOH bulletin, the death toll in the country has increased to over 33,000, while recoveries jumped by 18,754 to 1.83 million.
Over 140,000 active cases were recorded. About 96.1% of the cases were mild, 1.1% were asymptomatic, 1.2% were severe, 1.03% were moderate and 0.6% were critical.
In an interview with ABS-CBN News, Health expert Dr. Antonio C. Leachon said the coronavirus situation in the country will not improve if the government fails to enhance its pandemic response.
Leachon added that the Philippines may soon be the virus epicenter in the Southeast Asian region.
The former IATF member also encouraged the government to “revisit the vaccine inventory” to identify the effectiveness of the vaccines against the Delta variant and other emerging strains.
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Head of the Vaccine Development Expert Panel Nina G. Gloriani stated that they would conduct a study this month on the possibility of administering booster shots to inoculated individuals.
As of August 31, about 33 million doses of vaccines have been given out to Filipinos, 19 million of which were first doses.
