PH, Morocco to forge labor accord protecting OFWs
MANILA, PHILIPPINES — The Philippine and Moroccan governments are looking to establish a labor cooperation deal to further protect around 4,600 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the North African state.
According to Philippine Ambassador to Morocco Leslie Baja, this solution will be a win-win situation that would help protect OFWs while opening the Moroccan market for more Filipino professionals.
Baja added that the deal would be in the form of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) as proposed by the Moroccan side and considers “some of the basic aspects of our concerns on migration and labor.”
At the same time, the ambassador revealed that there is a growing interest in Morocco in hiring Filipino nurses.
“There has to be a mechanism in place because right now, current regulations do not allow, if I’m not mistaken, foreign nurses to work here, but if they open the market, that would be good,” he noted.
