Sri Lanka’s IT/BPM workforce up 22% in 2022
COLOMBO, SRI LANKA — The IT and Business Process Management (BPM) industries in Sri Lanka saw a 22% increase in their workforce in 2022, said IT/BPM national chamber SLASSCOM.
According to SLASSCOM’s Compensation & Benefits Report for 2022, there was a “favorable view” of the local job market last year, with the possibility of more expansions from the private sector.
Female representation in the IT industry also increased to 35%, while female participation in the BPM sector reached 46% in 2022.
These figures, said SLASSCOM, indicate that both industries are advancing their gender diversity and inclusivity initiatives.
Meanwhile, several IT/BPM firms have started implementing different strategies — such as pay schemes linked to inflation and exchange rates — to ensure their employees remain motivated and engaged.
However, many companies are still uncertain about their compensation strategies for 2023 as they anticipate changes in the market.
SLASSCOM Chairman Ashique Ali said that the report is a viable tool to assist businesses in making well-informed decisions regarding their hiring and retention strategies, enhancing employee engagement, and benchmarking against industry standards.
For 2023, the Sri Lankan tech industry plans to recruit 25% more employees to cope with the sector’s “sustained expansion and need for competent personnel.”
