Young UK workers demand employers prioritize sustainability initiatives

SURREY, UNITED KINGDOM — Ahead of World Earth Day, new research from employee benefits technology company Zest reveals that workers across the United Kingdom, especially younger generations, are increasingly focused on sustainability and expect their employers to do more.

The data shows that half (51%) of UK employees want their company to invest more in sustainability initiatives, rising to 61% for those aged 18-34.

Over half (53%) would like to see sustainable benefits like electric vehicles and green pensions offered, with two-thirds (66%) of younger workers desiring these options.

“It’s been a difficult few years for businesses, and the reality is that many – often not by choice – have been forced to put their sustainability initiatives on hold,” said Matt Russell, CEO of Zest.

“Yet with the next generation increasingly populating the workforce, many of whom are naturally engaged in sustainability initiatives that will support their future, businesses must adapt to these changing demands.”

Employers falling short on green expectations

Despite over half of businesses noticing employees caring more about sustainability, a third (33%) of younger workers aged 18-34 believe their employer does not prioritize it enough.

The disconnect is impacting morale, with 42% of that age group saying poor sustainability efforts hurt their motivation at work.

“Not only will a greater focus on this better meet individual needs, improving overall employee proposition and the ability to attract and retain talent, but crucially it will assist with the UK’s broader journey to net zero,” said Russell.

Zest’s research highlights the growing demand for employers to enhance their environmental efforts through sustainable employee benefits and initiatives.

Climate quitters redefine work culture and ethics

A growing number of employees are leaving or turning down jobs due to concerns that companies are not doing enough to address climate change.

This trend of “climate quitters” signals a major shift in the labor market, impacting everything from hiring strategies to maintaining strong employer brands.

A Yale study shows the willingness of some to accept less pay for greater moral satisfaction. Over half of recent business school graduates would take lower salaries to work for environmentally responsible companies.

Meanwhile, a landmark study predicts that over 1.7 million new green jobs will emerge across Europe by 2040, with 173,000 new jobs projected in the UK.
