5G connection speed in PH doubles

Fifth-generation (5G) mobile networks are making significant improvements in the Philippines, said network speed analyst Ookla.
According to Ookla’s latest report, the availability of 5G in the Philippines nearly doubled in just one year – from 9.4% in the first quarter of 2021 to 18.1% in the first quarter of 2022.
Connection speed also improved as a local telco recorded a median download speed of 200.43 Megabits per second (Mbps) and 19.67 Mbps upload speed in the first quarter of 2022.
Another telco, meanwhile, reported a median download of 121.29 Mbps and upload speeds of 9.93 Mbps.
Ookla said that the improvement is partly related to the easing of right-of-way (ROW) rules in the country. In 2021, the government enforced new ROW rules which lifted the construction ban on critical infrastructure, particularly cell sites, along national roads.
The network speed analyst also said that the active involvement of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in allowing more telcos to enter the playing field also strengthened internet connection in the Philippines.
Ookla explained that the introduction of a new network player adds competition which, in turn, leads to improved network performance and reduced market prices
Ookla also reported that two Philippine-based telcos are planning to further invest in 5G to deliver faster internet connections across the country.
