- Kenya has more than 40,000 BPO and GBS jobs, a principal secretary said in September.
ELDORET, KENYA — Kenya is courting outsourcing investors with Konza Technopolis, pitching infrastructure-ready space, a national data center and a framework to help companies set up faster. The goal is to create digital jobs beyond Nairobi.
The pitch in Eldoret
Kenya’s Technopolis Development Authority presented Konza as a hub for business process outsourcing and global business services (GBS) at the Rift Valley Global Services Forum in Eldoret, according to TechAfrica News. The roundtable was hosted by the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy and the Kenya Investment Authority.
Among the initiatives the authority highlighted was the BPO Onboarding Framework. It is designed to guide investors through establishing operations and to accelerate their entry into the market.
Power, data and skills
The authority outlined Konza’s infrastructure-ready spaces, reliable power and connectivity, and the Konza National Data Centre, which is intended to support BPO and other digital service operations. Its focus is on attracting investment, expanding digital infrastructure and creating employment.
On talent, it pointed to the Jitume Digital Enablement Programme, which provides skills training and connects young people to opportunities through digital hubs across Kenya.
The authority said partnerships with industry, government and county administrations would continue to strengthen Konza’s role in attracting BPO investment and expanding digital employment opportunities across the country.
Part of a wider push
The Eldoret pitch fits a government plan to take outsourcing work beyond Nairobi and Mombasa. In September, John Kipchumba Tanui, principal secretary for ICT and the digital economy, named Nakuru, Nyeri, Kericho and Eldoret among the towns the government wants to reach.
Tanui said Kenya’s digital economy supports more than 350,000 jobs, including more than 40,000 in BPO and GBS. He said the government’s focus is on moving the sector up the value chain.
Konza’s authority has worked on outsourcing before. In March, OA reported that it had developed AI contact center software with Huawei for a BPO hub at the Siaya Community Digital Hub.
In August, Invest Kenya and the Outsourcing Alliance of Kenya signed an agreement targeting $10 billion in foreign direct investment and 100,000 new sector jobs.
What it means for buyers
For companies looking at Kenya as an offshore outsourcing destination, the pitch points to delivery options outside the capital, backed by a government framework for setting up.
Buyers comparing business process outsourcing (BPO) locations can weigh Kenya against other hubs using the top BPO companies worldwide list.
