ESL activities hit by virus scare

ESL (English as Second Language) activities in Cebu have slowed down since the outbreak of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), as foreign students have cut down on their travel plans.
According to Department of Tourism 7 Director Shahlimar Tamano, the volume of foreign students who want to learn English in Cebu has slowed down. Cebu is a significant location for ESL in the Philippines.
It first offered services to Koreans, and eventually diversified to include other non-English speaking markets like Japan and most recently, Taiwan, which has been the fastest-growing ESL market to date.
Currently, there is a travel ban in place for visitors coming from and going to China, Hong Kong, and Macau. Cebu has more than 100 ESL schools.
