Digital gap potentially worsening in PH firms – DTI Undersecretary

The digital gap among enterprises in the Philippines has the potential to increase, raising the need for new policies to address this divide, said Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Undersecretary Rafaelita M. Aldaba.
During a virtual event, Aldaba stated that local firms with high-level technologies in their operations are usually large firms with foreign direct investment, with most of them concentrated in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and CALABARZON.
The trade undersecretary is emphasizing this issue “because if our policies won’t take these things into account — the adoption of these new technologies — (it) could lead to the worsening of the digital divide.”
Aldaba added that it is important to create new policies and programs that are “conscious of all these current operating systems, current situation, and conditions that our companies are faced with.”
Last June, the Philippine Exporters Confederation (PHILEXPORT) said that limited access to digital resources is setting back smaller companies that are operating throughout the pandemic.
