PH drops to 58th spot in digital competitiveness ranking

The Philippines dropped one spot to 58th out of 64 economies in future-readiness, technology, and knowledge, according to IMD business school’s World Digital Competitiveness Ranking 2021.
American Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (AMCHAM) Senior Advisor John Forbes said that the decline is “very concerning” especially after its Asia-Pacific ranking fell to 13th from 11th last 2017.
Forbes added that the Philippines’ latest digital competitiveness rank may be due to the lack of infrastructure in the country.
“The Open Access to Data Transmission bill has not even had one hearing in the Senate. Over 50 business groups have urged the Senate to open telecommunications to full foreign private sector ownership in the Public Service Act amendments,” the (AMCHAM) advisor stated.
Meanwhile, PHILEXPORT Chairman George Barcelon mirrored Forbes’ statement and said that the present IT infrastructure in the country is finding it hard to cope with more people working from home during the lockdown.
The Philippines retained its 13th spot among the 14 Asia-Pacific economies measured.
