PH workers need to upskill after pandemic — ADB

The Philippines will have to generate training programs and improve social protection to address the growing gap between employee skills and workplace expectations after the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to a report by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the two-year lockdown imposed due to the pandemic “disproportionately affected young people in the Philippines.”
However, the tech industry thrived during the past years. The ADB said that this incident, as well as the accelerated digital adoption of most companies, will increase skills mismatches for displaced workers.
The regional development bank suggested that the Philippines should invest in upskilling its workforce through industry-led training and apprenticeship programs.
They added that unemployment insurance should be strengthened “to provide workers with income stability during major economic shocks and disruptions to the labor market.”
Moreover, ADB President Masatsugu Asakawa encourages every Southeast Asian country “to invest in smart, green infrastructure and adopt technological innovations to reinvigorate economic growth.”
