New Amazon project to boost PH IT-BPM industry

A P524.33 million (US$9.3 million) project by multinational e-commerce company Amazon is expected to boost the Philippine Information Technology and Business Process Management (IT-BPM) industry.
Known as the Amazon Operation Services Philippines, Inc. (AOSPI), the project will serve as a new services export provider for the firm’s Virtual Customer Services (VCS) project in its new business site at the Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City.
The Board of Investments (BOI) explained that the AOSPI would provide various support services for remote technical problems, IT development, customer support, customer care, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), and back-office tasks.
The board also pointed out that this new investment emphasizes the Filipino workforce’s high technical skills and level of English proficiency.
AOSPI already had three sites across the Philippines — two in Cebu City and one in Metro Manila.
As for economic contribution, the BOI said that AOSPI is projected to generate 1,058 jobs for Filipinos.
About P959.5 million (US$17 million) is also expected to be contributed to the economy, while P616.9 million (US$11 million) will be added to household income.
BOI Managing Head Ceferino Rodolfo stated that the project’s approval “shows that we are not faltering in our efforts to advance the IT-BPM industry in the country. This is just the start of more investments being injected into the country’s economy, specifically into the IT-BPM industry. We are making it happen in the Philippines.”
