GSAJ head asks for independent classification for BPOs

Global Services Association of Jamaica (GSAJ) President Gloria Henry reiterated her calls to create a separate sector for the country’s Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) industry.
Stressing the importance of an independent classification, Henry noted that BPOs contributed more than 57,000 jobs and generated close to a billion dollars of revenue annually in Jamaica.
“We are still not recognized as an industry. I was watching the PIOJ [Planning Institute of Jamaica] report last night, and I was sad because they are still grouping us in services,” said Henry.
In an interview with Jamaica Observer, Henry explained listing BPO as its own industry help strengthen the sector’s position.
“It will give us the respect that we need to get in the public space. It will help the public to better understand that this is an industry of success and is contributing to Jamaica,” she stated.
Moreover, Henry emphasized that this move will signal to Jamaicans that BPO is an industry contributing significantly to Jamaica’s GDP.
