Jamaica’s outsourcing industry can embrace AI — Minister Aubyn Hill
KINGSTON, JAMAICA — Minister of Industry, Investment, and Commerce Senator Aubyn Hill is confident that the Jamaican outsourcing industry does not need to fear artificial intelligence (AI).
During his interview at the Outsource2Jamaica conference, Hill believes that necessary security measures will be implemented to ensure the responsible use of AI technology.
Despite growing concerns that AI could replace human jobs, Hill argued that technology should not be feared but embraced.
He noted that the introduction of computers did not lead to widespread job losses but instead helped young people learn new skills and spurred economic growth. The minister is bullish that AI could have a similar impact, as it has the potential to enhance businesses and make specific tasks easier for employees.
“As this new technology comes it will provide challenges, but we’re smart enough to get together to find a way to manage it,” Hill added.
Other conference presenters and panelists highlighted AI’s benefits for the outsourcing industry.
Claude Duncan, the head of outsourcing firm Sutherland Global, suggested that AI could enable individuals without an engineering degree to do work that previously required a Ph.D.
Duncan added that AI could lead to more complex work in Jamaica, boosting the country’s reputation as an outsourcing destination.
