Meta, Microsoft launch open-source AI ‘Llama 2’
CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — Tech giant Meta and Microsoft jointly launched a new free-to-use, open-source artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot called “Llama 2.”
Unlike its rivals — like OpenAI’s ChatGPT — Llama 2 is available for commercial and research purposes.
Building upon the earlier version of Llama, launched in February and later publicly modified after a leak, Meta and Microsoft are now aiming for transparency and allowing users to explore the data and code behind their AI.
“We believe an open approach is the right one for the development of today’s AI models, especially those in the generative space where the technology is rapidly advancing,” Meta noted in a blog post.
While specifics on the data utilized to develop Llama 2 remain undisclosed, a co-published research paper revealed that it was trained on a blend of publicly available data without incorporating any data from Meta’s products or services.
Llama 2 is accessible directly or through Microsoft’s cloud platform, Azure. Optimized for local operation on Windows, the AI system offers a streamlined workflow for developers to create diverse AI experiences.
Additionally, Llama 2 is available through other providers, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Hugging Face.
