Google employee pay structure exposed in leaked data

NEW YORK, UNITED STATES — A leaked internal Google spreadsheet revealed the salary data of over 12,000 US-based Google employees for 2022, shedding light on the company’s remuneration schemes.
Insider, the first to view the leaked data, noted that Google employees rank among the highest earners in the tech industry, with the median total compensation for 2022 reaching US$279,802.
Although base salaries are usually disclosed in job postings, actual earnings can be significantly higher when equity and bonuses are factored in.
The leaked data encompasses a range of roles, from software engineers to business analysts and salespeople.
Google provides equity to its employees as restricted stock units, substantially enhancing their overall remuneration. However, not all employees included their equity and bonus data in the spreadsheet.
The leaked data reveals a trend of higher salaries among longer-serving, senior-level employees. The highest-paid software engineer, a level 7 employee, reported a base salary of $718,000, while most software engineers disclosed earnings between $100,000 and $375,000.
Google spokesperson Tamani Jayasinghe confirmed the company’s dedication to competitive compensation, stating, “We provide top-of-market compensation to our workforce, across salary, equity, leave, and a suite of benefits.”
However, Insider also disclosed that the leaked data only applies to full-time U.S. employees and excludes salary information for employees in Alphabet’s Other Bets, such as Waymo and Verily.
