Durban BPOs partner with city to create jobs
DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA — Durban’s business process outsourcing (BPO) industry is teaming up with the local government to increase employment opportunities for youth in the city.
Industry leaders like CCI and the Durban Chamber of Commerce recently met with city officials to present the potential for BPO growth and create more jobs for the youth.
The Chamber’s CEO, Palesa Phili, stated that competing BPOs uniting with government support could secure incentives critical for increased cost-effectiveness and job creation. CCI South Africa’s CEO Peter Andrew agreed, adding that such incentives make cities more appealing to BPOs looking to expand operations and hiring.
In response, eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda shared a vision for Durban as a global leader in business and jobs. He pledged collaboration with industry to maintain Durban’s status as South Africa’s top outsourcing hub.
With over 40% of the city’s unemployed having abandoned job-seeking, solutions are urgently needed.
Stakeholders also hope the expanded BPO operations can accelerate hiring among other disadvantaged groups, like women, residing within the city.
