Experts optimistic about future of work over the next 50 years

MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES — Despite fears of widespread job losses due to automation and artificial intelligence (AI), a comprehensive report from the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) paints an optimistic picture of the future of work over the next 50 years.
Over 150 futurists predict a surge in employment opportunities across regenerative industries focused on sustainable practices, as well as care-based roles supporting community health and wellbeing.
“To make the most of the opportunities that become available in these sectors and in transformed industries such as transportation, energy, and health care, leaders must cultivate future-friendly skill sets and mindsets in their organizations,” the report stated.
BCG also identified skill sets of the future, including:
- Existential Capabilities, Mindsets, and Habits
- Bionic skills
- Creativity
- Human-to-human, Team-Focused, and Community-Focused Skills
“High-demand skills will include interpersonal communications, holistic security, creativity, and continuous learning that begins with a community’s early schooling.”
To harness these opportunities, BCG recommends policies promoting lifelong learning, tech literacy from an early age, and a culture of innovation and dialogue.
Initiatives like SkillsFuture Singapore and SENAI in Brazil exemplify successful strategies in preparing the workforce for upcoming challenges and opportunities.
The report emphasizes the need for collaboration between public and private sectors to maximize opportunities.
“Understanding the factors that will affect the 21st-century economy and crafting future-oriented policies will ensure that populations have what they need for shared purpose and success,” it stated.
