Amazon Web Services announces layoffs in sales, marketing, global services

WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES—Cloud computing giant Amazon Web Services (AWS) recently announced a significant workforce reduction, impacting several hundred employees across its Sales, Marketing, Global Services organization, and Physical Stores Technology team.
The move comes as the company seeks to realign its strategy and focus on key areas for future growth.
In internal emails to employees, AWS executives explained that the job cuts are concentrated in training and certification, sales operations, and technology roles for Amazon’s physical retail stores.
AWS Senior Vice President Matt Garman emphasized the need for agility in the fast-moving industry, stating, “We do not take these decisions lightly, and I know change can be difficult.”
He acknowledged the impact on affected individuals and outlined the company’s commitment to reducing duplication and inefficiency to prepare the organization for the future.
Despite the job cuts, AWS continues to hire and grow in other parts of its business, with thousands of open positions available.
The company is also actively working to find internal opportunities for those whose roles are being eliminated.
The job reductions are expected to affect regions globally, with a significant impact on its headquarters in Seattle.
U.S. employees will receive pay and benefits for at least 60 days, outplacement job search support, and access to transitional health benefits, along with severance payments.
Last year, AWS also laid off “some of its employees” in the U.S., Canada, and Costa Rica as part of Amazon’s plan to trim 9,000 jobs across the company.
