Carle Health integrates Nabla AI assistant into Epic EHR system

MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES — Carle Health, an Illinois-based health system, has announced the full rollout of Nabla’s ambient AI assistant following a successful four-week pilot program.
The AI tool, designed to reduce administrative burdens and enhance patient care, will be integrated with Carle Health’s Epic electronic health record (EHR) system.
This integration aims to save clinicians significant time on documentation, allowing them to focus more on patient interactions.
Integration with Epic EHR
Nabla’s AI assistant will be deployed across Carle Health’s multi-specialty physician group practice and emergency departments.
The integration with Epic EHR enables clinicians to access Nabla’s features directly from their desktop or mobile devices, eliminating the need to switch between systems.
This seamless workflow is expected to improve efficiency and reduce “pajama time”—the hours clinicians spend on EHR documentation after standard working hours.
Positive feedback from the pilot program
During the pilot, which included participants from family medicine, pediatrics, and cardiology, over 50% of clinicians reported saving at least one hour per day on documentation.
“Nabla fits seamlessly into our workflows, and thanks to the onboarding support and training we received throughout the pilot program, we started seeing results immediately,” said Dr. David Lovinger, Associate Chief Medical Officer and Chief Informatics Officer of Carle Health.
“Nabla enhanced the patient experience at our pilot sites by giving our providers more face time with their patients.”
Key features of Nabla’s AI assistant
Nabla’s AI assistant offers several features designed to streamline clinical documentation:
- Telehealth integration: Supports remote consultations.
- Multi-speaker functionality: Accurately captures conversations involving multiple participants.
- Automated data extraction: Pulls relevant patient data from Epic to inform clinical notes.
- One-click Export: Allows clinicians to export notes to Epic without manual copying and pasting.
- Problem list updates: Suggests updates to the patient’s problem list based on new diagnoses made during visits.
Future plans and broader impact
The rollout will gradually extend to 1,500 Carle Health providers, including those in emergency rooms and hospitalist roles, throughout the year.
“Our joint efforts to implement this Epic-integrated roll-out ensure clinicians at Carle Health can experience the full value of Nabla,” said Alex LeBrun, co-founder and CEO of Nabla.
Carle Health joins other innovative health systems, such as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and Mankato Clinic, in deploying Nabla’s AI assistant. Its adoption of Nabla’s ambient AI assistant marks a significant step towards leveraging technology to improve patient care and operational efficiency.
By reducing the administrative workload, Nabla allows clinicians to dedicate more time to direct patient care, enhancing the overall healthcare experience.
