CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — A new study by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll highlights how generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) can significantly reduce administrative burdens in the U.S. healthcare system.

Administrative overload and burnout

According to the study, healthcare professionals face substantial administrative demands, with clinicians spending nearly 28 hours weekly on tasks like record-keeping and insurance processing.

Medical office staff and claims personnel spend even more time, at 34 and 36 hours per week, respectively. This workload contributes to high burnout rates, affecting 82% of clinicians, 81% of medical staff, and 77% of claims staff.

The study also showed that 80% of healthcare providers believe these tasks reduce patient interaction time, impacting care quality. Concerns about human error are prevalent among two-thirds of providers and 89% of payors.

Positive reception for AI solutions

The report indicates strong support for generative AI solutions, with 91% of healthcare providers and 97% of payors expressing positive views on using AI for administrative tasks.

Aashima Gupta from Google Cloud stated, “Generative AI offers a powerful solution. By automating tasks and streamlining workflows, it supports healthcare experts, ultimately improving medical systems.”

Real-world applications

Healthcare organizations are already implementing AI tools. Hackensack Meridian Health has developed an AI-enabled chat tool using Google’s Gemini LLM to handle tasks like summarizing notes and drafting emails, enhancing productivity.

MEDITECH’s integration of AI in its Expanse EHR system allows quick access to patient information, saving up to 7.5 minutes per patient.

Future prospects for generative AI

The study suggests that generative AI can streamline processes such as prior authorization and claims processing by acting as an intelligent assistant. This technology promises faster approvals and improved accuracy in healthcare operations.

Companies like Waystar are partnering with Google Cloud to explore new GenAI capabilities, aiming to maximize reimbursements and enhance patient financial experiences.

By embracing generative AI, the healthcare industry is poised to transform its administrative landscape, enhancing efficiency and improving patient outcomes across the board.
