Kenya opens doors to remote workers with digital nomad visa
NAIROBI, KENYA — Kenya has announced the launch of a Digital Nomad Work Permit to attract global digital professionals and boost visitor numbers.
President William Ruto made the announcement at the Magical Kenya Travel Expo on October 2, marking a strategic move to position Kenya as a premier destination for remote workers.
Visa requirements and eligibility criteria
The Digital Nomad Work Permit targets international professionals who can work remotely while experiencing Kenya’s natural beauty. Applicants must demonstrate a minimum annual income of $53,922, possess a valid passport, provide proof of remote employment outside Kenya, secure local accommodation, and maintain a clean criminal record.
“The visa is specifically designed to welcome global digital professionals, allowing them to live and work in Kenya while enjoying the country’s natural beauty and high-quality lifestyle,” said President Ruto, as reported by Nation.
Tourism growth and future goals
Kenya’s tourism sector has shown remarkable growth, with visitor numbers increasing from 870,465 in 2021 to over 1.9 million in 2023, according to Statista. President Ruto has set an ambitious target of welcoming 5 million visitors annually by 2027, positioning the country as a must-visit destination.
Complementary travel initiatives
Alongside the digital nomad program, Kenya has introduced visa-free entry for tourists and business travelers for stays up to 90 days.
The government has also implemented the Transit and Long Connection Travelers Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), allowing travelers with extended layovers at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to explore the country rather than remain confined to airport terminals.
Kenya joins other African nations such as Mauritius, Cape Verde, Seychelles, and Namibia in offering digital nomad visas, reflecting a continental shift toward embracing remote work culture. Interested individuals can monitor updates through Kenya’s Directorate of Immigration Services website.
Other countries that offer digital nomad visas include Spain, Italy, Portugal, Thailand, Taiwan, Turkiye, Japan and South Africa.
