In a LinkedIn post, John Walter, President of the Contact Center AI Association, said: “The announcement provides a glimpse into the future of customer experience.” 

The new system introduces single-use virtual cards that allow AI agents to execute purchases independently on behalf of customers.

The new system eliminates several traditional friction points in the customer journey. Instead of navigating multiple websites, comparing prices, and manually entering payment details, customers can now simply state their requirements to an AI agent.

In Walter’s example, when a customer requests an AI agent to book a specific flight within a budget, the agent can analyze options and complete the transaction using Stripe’s restricted-amount virtual cards, streamlining the entire booking process.

Enhanced security and convenience

Stripe’s approach to security through restricted virtual cards adds an extra layer of protection while maintaining seamless transactions. 

Each transaction receives a dedicated virtual card with preset spending limits, ensuring controlled expenditure and reducing fraud risks. This approach maintains customer confidence while enabling autonomous AI operations.

This dual focus on security and convenience addresses two primary customer concerns in digital payments: safety and ease of use.

The introduction of metered billing for AI agents creates a scalable model for businesses.
