ILO outlines three key shifts for future of work

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL — The International Labour Organization (ILO) has identified three crucial transitions needed to reshape the future of work, as discussed at the recent G20 Social Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
Strengthening labor markets
In a panel session organized by the Central Única dos Trabalhadores – CUT (Brazilian Unified Workers’ Central), ILO Deputy Director-General Celeste Drake emphasized that robust labor market institutions are important in ensuring workers receive fair compensation for their contributions.
Drake added that effective minimum wage policies and protection of workers’ rights to organize and engage in collective bargaining are needed.
Technology and social dialogue
The second transition focuses on integrating emerging technologies in the workplace.
“Tripartism and social dialogue are essential to ensure these technologies elevate workers while benefiting companies,” Drake stated during the summit.
Environmental sustainability
The third transition addresses the pressing need for environmental sustainability in the workplace.
This transformation requires careful attention to creating sustainable enterprises while ensuring workers benefit from the changes. The ILO emphasizes that social dialogue plays a crucial role in making this transition inclusive.
António Lisboa, Secretary of International Relations for the Brazilian Unified Workers’ Central, reinforced these points by highlighting the fundamental importance of dignified work.
“When I speak of the value of work, it’s about dignified, decent work, where individuals, through their contributions, build the world we want. Today, work is being devalued,” Lisboa remarked.
The summit’s discussions underscore the growing recognition that workplace transformation must balance technological advancement with worker protection and environmental responsibility. These transitions are expected to shape employment practices and labor policies worldwide as organizations adapt to evolving workplace dynamics.
