Work tech tools boost productivity despite Zoom fatigue: LiveCareer survey

GUAYNABO, PUERTO RICO — The digital workplace transformation reveals both benefits and challenges in professional communication.

According to the latest Workplace Technology Survey by LiveCareer, 59% of U.S. employees affirm that tools such as Slack, Microsoft Teams, and Zoom are pivotal in boosting productivity.

However, these tools also introduce significant challenges, with 45% of workers experiencing considerable “Zoom fatigue,” particularly men who report a higher incidence compared to women.

Zoom fatigue: More men affected

The survey, which examined the responses of 1,130 American workers on November 27, 2024, reveals a disparity in how virtual meetings impact male and female employees.

While 49% of men reported feeling “often” or “always” drained by virtual meetings, only 40% of women felt the same. Interestingly, 30% of women report seldom experiencing this fatigue, compared to just 20% of men.

Technology needs and future trends

While the majority see a productivity boost from these digital tools, a minority are adversely affected. One in five employees states that these platforms hinder their work efficiency.

Despite the widespread use of communication platforms, employees see room for improvement in their companies’ tech stacks. There is a demand for better time-tracking software (52%), enhanced task management tools (45%), and more AI-powered tools (38%).

The call for more AI tools is the most prominent, with 38% of the respondents hoping for increased use of technology such as ChatGPT and Grammarly in their work.

Younger workers, especially those aged 25 and below, are the most enthusiastic, with 99% confirming that technology makes them more productive. The enthusiasm tapers off slightly with age, with 95% of those between 26-40 and 85% of those above 41 expressing the same sentiment.

Recommendations for organizations

Jasmine Escalera, a career expert at LiveCareer, emphasizes the importance of aligning technology with employee needs. “Understanding how technology impacts your team is critical,” she said.

“By addressing challenges like Zoom fatigue and ensuring employees have access to the tools they value most, companies can create an environment that fosters productivity, well-being, and engagement.”
