MARYLAND, UNITED STATES — Job seekers are feeling more optimistic about finding quality jobs in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

According to Aerotek’s latest Job Seeker Survey, 43% believe their chances of securing a quality job have improved, up from 28% in the previous quarter.

On the other hand, fewer job seekers feel their chances have worsened, with only 20% reporting a decline compared to 35% in the fourth quarter of 2024.

The survey included over 3,200 job seekers in the United States and Canada in February. It targeted job seekers who have applied since January in the sectors Aerotek serves, including manufacturing, robotics and automation, facilities and maintenance, distribution and logistics, construction and other industries.

Shifting priorities: Job security gains importance

Job security is increasingly becoming as important as pay, with 23% citing it as their top motivator, up from 20% in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, pay as the primary motivator decreased from 42% to 28% over the same period.

“In 2025, job seekers are navigating a dynamic landscape. Confidence in job prospects is rising, yet job security is becoming as important as pay, and the pursuit of a second job is driven by more than just financial needs,” said Bill Ruff, vice president, strategic sales at Aerotek.

Beyond financial gains: The appeal of second jobs

For those seeking a second job, the motivations extend beyond financial needs. The top motivator in the first quarter was the opportunity to learn new skills, cited by 15% of respondents, up from 8% in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Over 20% of survey respondents are currently looking for a second job or have held one in the past year, with 83% seeking to learn new skills or enter a new industry.

Key insights for employers

The survey emphasizes the importance of personal interaction during the hiring process, with over 70% of job seekers highlighting its significance. Employers looking to attract top talent should focus on communicating key motivators such as job security, career advancement, and skill development.

“The findings from our latest Job Seeker Survey offer valuable insights for employers aiming to attract and retain top talent. Emphasizing pay, career advancement and skill development are important ways to address job seekers’ priorities today,” Ruff advised.
