Hybrid work a top priority for Irish employees, Ibec survey reveals

DUBLIN, IRELAND — As Ireland prepares for National Workplace Wellbeing Day on April 30, new research from Ibec shows that flexible and hybrid work models are increasingly central to employee satisfaction and mental health.
The survey of more than 1,000 workers found that 68% consider hybrid and flexible work essential to their overall wellbeing. Additionally, 35% said they would leave a higher-paying job in favor of one offering greater flexibility.
“This research underscores that workplace wellness has never been more important. Companies must continue to invest in it, while staying agile to meet the evolving needs of their workforce,” said Ibec CEO Danny McCoy.
Wellness investment rising, but gaps remain
The post-pandemic era has shifted perceptions around health at work, with 69% of respondents saying wellness has become a bigger priority in recent years.
Companies appear to be responding, as 28% of employees reported a noticeable increase in wellness-related initiatives, and 30% observed a moderate rise.
Still, gaps remain. Over one-third (35%) of participants said their line managers lack the training or support to lead on wellbeing issues effectively.
Patrick Haslett, product manager for Ibec’s KeepWell initiative, noted: “Employees clearly value flexibility, so much so that some are willing to leave well-paying jobs if hybrid work is not available.”
He added that while hybrid work brings benefits, it also presents risks like social isolation. “We can expect a stronger emphasis on intentional connection, such as ‘anchor days’, to ensure employees feel supported in all aspects of their wellbeing.”
Wellbeing priorities vary by demographic
The survey also highlighted gender differences in wellbeing priorities. While more men (62%) supported physical wellness initiatives, a higher share of women (nearly two-thirds) prioritized mental health support.
Younger employees and those approaching retirement were especially drawn to community and social engagement programs.
As Ireland’s job market tightens, wellness is becoming a key differentiator for employers. With professionals increasingly demanding workplace cultures that support their mental, emotional, and physical health, companies looking to retain top talent may find that flexibility is not just a perk—but a necessity.
