AI drives surge in job candidate ghosting crisis: LiveCareer survey

GUAYNABO, PUERTO RICO — Job candidate ghosting has reached unprecedented levels, with hiring managers pointing the finger at artificial intelligence.
According to LiveCareer’s recent Candidate Ghosting & AI Report, 88% of more than 900 surveyed human resources professionals say candidates have abruptly disappeared mid-hiring process.
Seventy-one percent also report that ghosting has worsened over the past year.
Hiring managers are pointing fingers at AI and automation. Sixty-five percent believe these technologies contribute to candidates dropping off. The growing reliance on automated screenings and impersonal follow-ups appears to alienate job seekers, making them more likely to vanish without notice.
AI’s role in widening the divide
While intended to streamline hiring, AI-led steps may actually discourage engagement.
“When hiring feels overly automated, job seekers disengage,” the report notes, emphasizing the lack of human connection as a critical factor. This disconnect fuels candidates’ decisions to ghost, seeking opportunities elsewhere where they feel more valued.
Data shows that 12% of HR professionals have been ghosted even after extending formal job offers.
Candidates typically disappear after an initial recruiter screening (36%), followed by the first interview (26%) and the application stage (22%). Few vanish only after accepting offers (5%), underscoring how early frustrations drive most ghosting behavior.
Communication breakdowns and competition fuel silence
HR experts say poor communication, lengthy timelines, and competitive job markets are key reasons candidates go silent.
Over half (54%) believe unclear employer communication pushes candidates away, while 42% attribute ghosting to better offers elsewhere. Lengthy or frustrating hiring experiences also prompt 39% of candidates to disengage.
“Job candidates ghosting hiring managers has become a routine challenge and can cause serious delays to a company’s recruiting timeline,” the report says.
“Candidates are disappearing at all stages, leaving employers scrambling to fill roles and keep recruitment efforts on track.”
As AI continues transforming recruitment, companies must address these unintended side effects to maintain meaningful candidate relationships and streamline hiring success.
