Cognizant pulls logo in India after court trademark ruling

NEW DELHI, INDIA — Cognizant has temporarily taken down its hexagonal logo from digital platforms in India after the Bombay High Court reinstated an injunction blocking the company from using the design.
The decision comes amid a trademark battle with Bengaluru-based Atyati Technologies and highlights how intellectual property disputes can ripple through the outsourcing industry.
Trademark clash with Atyati Technologies
The clash began when Atyati argued that Cognizant’s blue hexagonal honeycomb logo resembled its own orange honeycomb mark too closely.
In March 2024, a single-judge bench of the Bombay High Court sided with Atyati and issued an interim ban on Cognizant’s use of the mark. That ruling was lifted a few months later. But in late August 2025, a Division Bench overturned the earlier relief and restored the restriction.
In compliance, Cognizant removed the logo from its Indian website and social media pages while exploring its legal options.
“We are currently reviewing the interim order and intend to pursue available legal remedies to defend our position and challenge it. Cognizant is firmly committed to complying with the laws and regulations in every jurisdiction in which we operate,” a Cognizant spokesperson said in an email response to Mint.
The company escalated the matter to the Supreme Court of India, which set aside the Division Bench ruling and instructed the High Court to resolve the case on its merits. The case is set for a hearing on Monday, according to court filings reviewed by Mint.
Branding and outsourcing industry impact
The case underscores the significance of branding in India’s fiercely competitive outsourcing sector. With more than 343,800 employees in India supporting its global delivery model, Cognizant’s reputation and client trust are critical.
Even small shifts in branding can raise concerns among clients and talent, making legal disputes like this more than just a courtroom issue.
While Cognizant reassured stakeholders that its operations remain unaffected, the case serves as a reminder that intellectual property battles can create reputational risks for global service providers.
As the proceedings continue, the outsourcing industry and Cognizant’s clients worldwide will be watching closely. In a sector built on trust and consistency, a logo can carry far more weight than just design.
Cognizant ranked #7 in the OA500 2025, an objective index of the world’s top 500 outsourcing companies.
