Alavie acquired by Visma to expand compliance software in Italy

LOMBARDIA, ITALY, and OSLO, NORWAY — Italian compliance software provider Alavie has joined Norway-based Visma in a strategic acquisition that strengthens regulatory technology solutions for Italy’s professional sector.
This partnership positions Alavie to accelerate its innovation and expand the reach of its highly specialized solutions to a fragmented market that is critically in need of automation.
Expanding Visma’s footprint in Italy
Visma is a European and Latin American giant in mission-critical business software, which in 2024 achieved a significant revenue of €2.8 billion (US$3.3 billion). The company employs 17,500 staff to provide software services to 2.1 million customers, primarily small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and public sector organizations, automating their processes and leveraging the opportunities of digitalization and AI.
Alavie is an Italian company with a history spanning over 30 years as one of the top-ranking audit firms, offering regulatory compliance services that include anti-money laundering (AML) and other regulations, as well as integrated consulting and technology services. The firm can generate approximately $11.9 million; this is why the firm focuses on creating specialized software that helps accountants, notaries, and law firms perform complex legal processes efficiently.
The acquisition of Alavie implies the strategic expansion of the Visma offering to the Italian market, which is particularly focused on meeting the complex requirements of professional service companies for custom-built compliance tools.
This move puts Alavie in a better position to offer highly specialized solutions, thereby hastening its growth and expanding distribution, while leveraging the vast scale and resources of Visma.
Tackling compliance challenges for Italy’s SMBs
The acquisition is a direct response to the unique structure of Italy’s professional services landscape. The market is large but very fragmented, with more than 120,000 tax advisors and accountants working with SMBs than in any other European Union country.
There is high regulatory pressure on these professionals, especially regarding anti-money laundering (AML) procedures; yet, the scale of these operations frequently exceeds the capabilities of in-house expertise, underscoring the need for third-party and automated solutions.
This acquisition of Visma fills a significant gap by incorporating Laegis AML, a best-in-class compliance platform, into Visma’s broader software ecosystem. This enables Visma to offer a total, mission-critical suite that automates up to 95% of manual compliance operations for accounting offices, notaries, and law firms.
This enables Visma to provide a comprehensive, mission-critical suite that helps automate and operate efficiently for accounting offices, notaries, and law firms, effectively bundling services to a widely dispersed customer base.
Democratizing compliance expertise
A central driver of this acquisition is the use of software to democratize access to specialized knowledge. One of the key areas of concern is compliance requirements, particularly AML, in smaller accounting practices that cannot afford to employ dedicated compliance teams.
The technology platform developed by Alavie is akin to a multiplier, where deep regulatory knowledge is embedded within the software to alert and create control over the field, thereby equalizing the playing field for smaller firms.
Visma has a large user base, and Alavie has a keen innovation that, together, can help propel the creation of next-generation compliance tools.
Steffen Torp, the Chief Commercial Officer of Visma, noted, “Their deep compliance expertise and commitment to quality make them an ideal partner as we strengthen our offer in Italy. We look forward to supporting Alavie’s continued innovation and helping more professionals navigate complex compliance requirements with confidence.”
For Alavie, joining the Visma group marks a significant leap forward. “Joining Visma marks an exciting new chapter for Alavie,” said Vito Ziccardi, Founder of Alavie.
“Thanks to Visma’s scale and resources, we will be able to accelerate development towards a fully integrated suite, delivering even greater value to our customers.”
The combination of Visma’s extensive market reach and Alavie’s in-depth regulatory expertise is poised to transform the standard for compliance software, compelling the entire sector toward more integrated and automated solutions.
