Epiq sells business division to K2 Services, refocuses on legal tech

Epiq sells business division to K2 Services, refocuses on legal tech

NEW YORK and ILLINOIS, UNITED STATES — Epiq, a provider of legal services and technology, has sold its Global Business Transformation Solutions (GBTS) division to K2 Services, a managed services provider.

In its press release, Epiq notes that this strategic move signals its intent to sharpen its focus on and increase investment in its core, technology-driven legal offerings.

As Epiq’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), David Dobson notes, “The sale of Epiq GBTS is a strategic shift as we continue to focus on innovation, expanding our technology portfolio, and delivering even greater impact to our clients across the legal ecosystem.”

The sale concludes a process in which Rothschild & Co. served as financial advisor and Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP as legal counsel to Epiq.

Strengthening tech capabilities with acquisition

Epiq is a technology and services provider that collaborates with corporations, law firms, and courts to simplify complex legal, compliance, and settlement transactions through people data intelligence and process intelligence.

The company is present in 17 countries and is focused on creating efficiency, reducing risk, and enhancing cost savings for its clients within the legal ecosystem

This specialized focus on the legal industry makes its divested business unit a strategic acquisition for a services provider like K2 Services.

K2 Services is an organization that offers managed services in IT, consolidated support, and enterprise technology platforms to the juridical sector.

The company simplifies the complexities of complex technology platforms through strategic alliances with cloud, software, and hardware vendors, enabling clients to streamline workflows, accelerate user adoption, and reinvest in core business projects.

Epiq pivots to AI-driven legal tech

This decision underscores a focused effort to double down on their identity as the most advanced alternative legal service provider, a title they claim in the press release, by prioritizing services-enabled technology.

This refined focus will enable Epiq to channel its investments into developing proprietary AI solutions and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solutions. “At Epiq, we made a commitment to our clients to never leave them behind when it comes to technology and its application,” said Dobson.

The company indicated that it will continue to concentrate and invest in services-enabled technology, rather than the wider business process outsourcing heralded by GBTS.

This move positions Epiq to be a tech-enabled provider of legal solutions that achieves workflow efficiency, settlement, and compliance by integrating people, processes, technology, and data intelligence.

K2 Services expands managed services with GBTS acquisition

For K2 Services, the acquisition instantly expands its portfolio and market reach by absorbing an entire division of a major industry player.

The acquired Epiq GBTS business has a record of assisting organizations in streamlining operations and improving efficiency through outsourcing front, middle, and back-office business services.

This fusion will enable K2 Services to provide greater scalability, centralized operations, and improved cost-effectiveness to a larger customer base, making significant progress toward becoming one of the managed services providers.

The new entity will be spearheaded by Michelle Deichmeister, the former President of Epiq GBTS, who has been appointed as its CEO.

Under her leadership, the business is poised to evolve beyond traditional managed services; Deichmeister stated, “By combining proven expertise, integrated capabilities and a clear go-to-market focus, K2 Services’ new entity will redefine how organizations tackle operational transformation.”

She articulated a vision for the company to become a strategic partner, concluding that, “This newly formed business will be more than a managed services provider — we’re strategically helping our clients architect the operational backbone of their business.”
