AI can automate 90% of back office tasks, Parseq report finds

ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM — Artificial intelligence (AI) is set to revolutionize the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, with a new study from a United Kingdom managed service provider, Parseq, suggesting that 90% of back-office tasks can now be automated.
The findings signal a shift in the outsourcing landscape, with the focus moving away from simple cost-cutting toward strategic agility, access to specialist skills, and risk mitigation.
Automation reshaping back office operations
Parseq’s report, Reimagining Business Processes with AI, highlights how technological advancements are transforming routine administrative work.
The report states that workloads that were once heavily human-driven, with people handling 90% of the tasks, have now shifted—machines can manage 90% of back-office activities, allowing humans to focus on innovation, exception management, and tasks requiring empathy.
The study also shows that AI has evolved beyond basic rule-based automation. Systems are now capable of learning and generating solutions independently, delivering unprecedented efficiency and accuracy in handling back-office processes.
This technological shift allows businesses to focus human talent on problem-solving and customer interactions that demand a personal touch.
Outsourcing motives shift from cost to capability
According to the report, a growing number of UK companies are planning to increase their reliance on managed service partners. Around 71% of large enterprises and 24% of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) intend to expand outsourcing support over the next three years.
The primary driver is no longer cost reduction, cited by just 23% of companies, but access to specialist skills, reported by 32% of organizations.
“Organizations today are under immense pressure to adapt and innovate, and tech-enabled outsourcing provides a proven, low risk transformation route that unlocks new levels of strategic advantage,” said Craig Naylor-Smith, CEO at Parseq, emphasizing the strategic value of tech-enabled outsourcing.
“The future of back office activities and outsourcing lies in a collaborative approach to AI and automation, where machines handle routine, data intensive tasks, and people are freed to focus on complex problem solving and empathetic customer interactions,” Naylor-Smith added.
The future of outsourcing: Human-AI collaboration
The Parseq report underscores a broader trend in the BPO sector: companies are increasingly seeking transformative solutions rather than merely reducing labor costs.
Businesses that embrace AI-driven outsourcing not only gain operational efficiency but also create a competitive edge through enhanced agility and specialist expertise. As automation becomes more sophisticated, the role of human workers is shifting toward high-value tasks, signaling a fundamental redefinition of the back office in the digital age.
