ALGIERS, ALGERIA — Algeria has officially kicked off the experimental phase of a shared call center for the country’s telecommunications operators, marking a significant step toward its goal of expanding the telecom market to US$1.2 billion by 2029.

According to a report from Ecofin Agency, the initiative, inaugurated on November 23 in Ouargla by Sid Ali Zerrouki, Minister of Post and Telecommunications, is designed to streamline citizen services while supporting the nation’s digital transformation.

Shared call center to digitize citizen services in Algeria

The new call center will serve as a common platform for operators, including Algérie Télécom, Algérie Poste, and Mobilis.

Minister Zerrouki stated that the facility will enable the digitized, organized handling of citizens’ requests while providing systematic information on the services offered by the Post and Telecommunications sector.

The center is also intended to route callers to specialized services and ensure proper coordination among sector institutions. Officials say this approach will improve service quality and efficiency, aligning with Algeria’s broader push toward digital governance.

Initially, the call center will employ 480 staff, with a long-term target of creating 10,000 jobs by 2027. The facility is planned to expand gradually to include other companies from the broader economic sector, positioning Algeria as a competitive player in the regional and international call center market

“Promising project that positions Algeria on the call center market map both regionally and internationally,” said Zerrouki, describing the project.

Algeria rides Africa’s fast‑growing BPO market

The timing of Algeria’s call center development coincides with rapid growth in Africa’s outsourcing industry. Revenue from the continent’s business process outsourcing (BPO) market is projected to reach $9.42 billion by 2030, up from $7.15 billion in 2025, according to Statista

Africa’s BPO appeal stems from a skilled, English-speaking workforce and lower labor costs compared to other regions.

The project is also aligned with Algeria’s “Digital Algeria 2030” strategy, which aims to make digital technology a major driver of economic diversification, job creation, and international competitiveness.

Minister Zerrouki pointed out that Algiers aims to contribute $30 billion to GDP by 2029, and the call center initiative is one of the ways to achieve that goal.

Algeria’s decision can be viewed as a tactical move to leverage its human resources and digital infrastructure to tap into the growing global BPO market.

The country is striving to become a significant hub for both regional and international clients through job creation and technological upgrading, thus showing that investments in digital platforms are a good way to stimulate economic growth.
