AI firms use free India plans to train models and win market

MADHYA PRADESH, INDIA — Tech giants are offering free premium artificial intelligence (AI) subscriptions in India, but this move is far from altruistic. From ChatGPT Go to Perplexity Pro, companies are using free access to tap into India’s massive user base and data diversity.
According to a report from Bhaskar English, these free subscriptions are simply a gateway to quickly bring millions into the ecosystem, underscoring how India has become a critical battleground in the global AI race.
India’s cheap data fuels rapid AI adoption
India’s digital landscape is unique. With more internet users than most countries, smartphones everywhere, and one of the cheapest mobile data rates globally, the country offers tech companies an unmatched opportunity to reach millions instantly.
Telecom giants like Airtel and Jio play a pivotal role. Bundling AI tools with mobile plans enables companies like Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity to access a massive audience effortlessly.
“For AI companies, India offers something far more valuable: data and diversity,” the report notes.
Every interaction, from typed queries to uploaded images, feeds AI models, helping them improve accuracy and global relevance.
AI companies chase India’s data and language diversity
India’s linguistic and cultural variety makes it a goldmine for AI training. With hundreds of dialects and millions of online users interacting differently, AI systems can learn nuances in language, accents, and behavior patterns.
“AI models don’t improve magically, they grow and become more accurate by learning from enormous amounts of data,” the article notes.
While these strategies offer global companies an advantage, they raise privacy concerns. India currently lacks AI-specific regulations, and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act (DPDP 2023) has not yet fully addressed AI accountability.
As a result, users have limited control over how their data trains AI models, a problem compounded by the technical challenge of removing data once it has been incorporated into AI systems.
India’s outsourcing advantage
Beyond user data, India offers a skilled IT workforce, making it ideal for building AI datasets, running cloud operations, and moderating content. Small towns and tier-2 cities are becoming hubs for AI training, reinforcing India’s position not just as a market but as a strategic operational base.
“Many AI companies see India not just as a market but also as a place to build datasets, run cloud farms, and develop content moderation operations,” the report highlights.
In essence, free AI subscriptions are less about generosity and more about strategic investment. By combining scale, linguistic diversity, and a vast IT workforce, India allows global AI firms to refine models faster, gain higher valuations, and secure a foothold in one of the world’s fastest-growing digital markets.
