Cognizant opens India AI lab in $1Bn generative AI drive

BENGALURU, INDIA — Cognizant has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) lab and digital experience studio in Bengaluru, India, marking a significant expansion of its global AI research capabilities and a key deployment of its pledged $1 billion generative AI investment.
The dual-facility innovation hub is designed to accelerate enterprise adoption of advanced, multi-agent AI systems while ensuring they are built on a foundation of responsible design and human-centric experience.
Cognizant scales AI builder strategy from U.S. to India
The new India AI Lab directly scales the work of its San Francisco-based AI Lab, which holds 61 United States patents, by tapping into Bengaluru’s renowned pool of engineering and scientific talent.
“Cognizant plays a pivotal role in enterprise AI by acting as an ‘AI builder,’ bringing together our platforms, partnerships, and highly skilled workforce to bridge infrastructure investment and business value,” said Ravi Kumar S, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Cognizant.
The core function of this expansion is to bridge high-level AI research with tangible business value. The lab will be staffed by PhD-level scientists and engineers focused on applied research in multi-agent systems, AI decisioning, and responsible AI.
Their work aims to translate theoretical advances into proprietary frameworks and reusable components, strengthening Cognizant’s intellectual property portfolio and creating what the company calls “intelligent systems that support dependable decision-making for enterprises.”
Bengaluru AI hub links multi-agent AI and CX design
The innovation hub uniquely pairs deep technical AI research with a dedicated focus on user experience and ethical implementation. The new Cognizant Moment Studio, located at the same site as the India AI Lab, will aim to use AI to transform the customer experience and expand its client base.
This framework aims to develop technological innovations in areas such as agentic AI architectures, while adhering to the principles of reliable, human-centered design.
This hybrid strategy goes beyond Cognizant leadership’s next requisite leap: combining potent multi-agent systems with beautiful, efficient user experiences.
The initiative will advance research in AI trust and next-generation UX. As Benjamin Wiener, Global Head of Cognizant Moment, notes, “The India AI Lab and Cognizant Moment Studio combine technological expertise with human insight to create a new generation of digital experiences that are intelligent, elegant, powerful, and effective, delivered seamlessly to our clients.”
Furthermore, the lab’s mandate includes “responsible AI and AI-for-good initiatives.” It plans for partnerships, underscoring a commitment to developing technology with ethical and societal considerations embedded from the outset.
Cognizant was previously ranked #7 in the OA500 2025, an objective index of the world’s top 500 outsourcing companies.
