80% of workers feel unprepared for 2026 job market: LinkedIn

CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES — New global research from LinkedIn reveals a stark disconnect in the 2026 labor market: while over half of professionals plan to change jobs, nearly 80% feel unprepared, even as two-thirds of recruiters report increased difficulty finding quality talent.

The survey, which was conducted by Censuswide and polled 19,113 consumers from November 13-28 alongside 6,554 global HR professionals from November 10-27 in 2025, found that this growing chasm is being bridged by artificial intelligence (AI), with both sides rapidly adopting AI tools to gain a competitive edge in an increasingly challenging hiring landscape.

Global job market grows more competitive in 2026

According to LinkedIn statistics, the number of applications per job posting in the United States has doubled since the spring of 2022 and is becoming increasingly competitive.

Such an environment leads 65% of the world to think that the job search is becoming harder and that competition is the central obstacle. This is followed by whether they are a good fit for the role and whether they have the necessary skills.

For recruiters, the pressure has shifted from volume to precision. They have fewer open roles but face higher stakes, with 66% stating it is harder to find qualified talent over the last year.

The report states that this is compounded by growing pressure to fill roles faster (reported by 42% of recruiters) and uncover “hidden gem” candidates, a priority for 39%. This dynamic underscores a market where efficiency and targeted discovery are paramount for hiring success.

AI in hiring boosts recruiters and job seekers in 2026

Instead of being an aspect of the future, AI is now a reality that plays a present-day role in the recruitment process, providing a competitive advantage to recruiters and confidence to candidates.

An overwhelming majority of recruiters (93% of those polled) intend to use AI more in 2026, and 59% of those surveyed already attribute the discovery of candidates with skills they would have otherwise overlooked to AI.

More importantly, nearly all (66%) plan to use AI for pre-screening interviews, a change they believe will result in 70% more valuable dialogues with job seekers

At the same time, job seekers are turning to AI to overcome the same processes that intimidate them, with 81% having used or intending to use AI in their job search, and 48% of all reporting that the use of AI technologies has given them confidence in their interview.

The report notes, “All generations, from Boomers to Gen Z, share the same struggle: they’re unsure how to stand out in new AI-driven hiring processes—yet the majority plan to use AI tools in their job search.”

This accelerating AI race is transforming hiring into a hyper-efficient, yet potentially homogenized, process that will ultimately transform which human skills hold premium value in the labor market of the future.
