AI upgrades South Africa’s entry-level BPO jobs to hybrid roles

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — South Africa’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) is not eliminating entry-level jobs as some feared, but transforming them into hybrid, higher-value roles, ITWeb reports.
The report, Building the Youth Economy in SA: Services, Skills, and the AI Transition, conducted by the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator in partnership with The Bridgespan Group, highlights how AI is reshaping workflows, placing greater emphasis on oversight, judgment, and customer engagement.
Impact of AI on South Africa’s BPO and IT sectors
According to the report, South Africa’s AI market experienced 31% annual growth between 2023 and 2024, which showed rapid technological adoption across various industries. Additionally, AI transforms work processes in business process outsourcing (BPO) and IT-enabled services sectors instead of causing mass layoffs.
“Across markets, AI is reshaping jobs rather than eliminating them,” said Victoria Duncan, head of research at the Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator.
“Hybrid and higher-value roles that rely on human judgement, emotional intelligence and contextual understanding are emerging. Human oversight of AI agents remains essential to manage outputs, ensure accuracy and maintain authentic customer engagement, especially with complex customer experience work for regulated sectors,” Duncan added.
Most businesses use hybrid work systems for their entry-level BPO and IT service positions. Frontline agents now supervise AI outputs while they validate automated decisions, handle escalations and provide direct support to customers.
The transition decreases routine operations while it increases the need to address exceptional situations, maintain quality standards and resolve difficult challenges.
“This scenario enhances South Africa’s position in complex, empathy-led customer experience and supports clear pathways from entry-level roles into higher-value, hybrid work,” the report explained.
Hybrid AI roles boost youth employment in South Africa
AI adoption creates job opportunities for youth through its implementation in business operations. AI technologies automate basic tasks, which frees up young workers to perform jobs that need understanding, emotional intelligence, and problem-solving abilities.
Initiatives like the South Africa youth contact center are already using AI-driven tools to provide guidance, intelligent routing, and safety monitoring for over five million young workers.
“AI is not just a tool for efficiency; it can create meaningful pathways for youth into higher-value work,” Duncan said.
“When implemented strategically, AI allows young workers to move faster through career development pipelines, gaining experience in hybrid roles that combine technical skills with uniquely human capabilities,” Duncan added.
South Africa’s tourism industry, with all customer-based businesses, receives benefits from AI, which creates specialized experiences for customers while assisting self-employed workers and gig economy workers.
Projects show that AI integration will create 1.28 million tourism jobs by 2030, which exceeds the 75,000 additional jobs that would exist without AI adoption.
South Africa’s AI-based transformation creates advantages for its outsourcing and customer service sectors that gain from workers who possess both human empathy and technological efficiency, thus establishing a competitive advantage that prepares young people for their future careers.
