Healthcare jobs lead Indeed’s 2026 U.S. best jobs list

Healthcare jobs lead Indeed’s 2026 U.S. best jobs list

TEXAS, UNITED STATES — The 2026 job market is defined by concentrated growth rather than broad-based expansion, with healthcare professions dominating the list of top career opportunities, according to Indeed’s 2026 index of the Best Jobs in the United States.

“The labor market overall has been in this low-hire, stagnant space for the last year,” said Laura Ullrich, North America Research Director for the Indeed Hiring Lab.

“One major exception is healthcare. Only 11% of total jobs are in healthcare, but it represents 72% of the job growth [in the broader job market].”

Top healthcare jobs driving U.S. employment growth

While the broader labor market has entered a period of stagnation, healthcare stands as a stark exception to the slowdown.

This sector alone drives the vast majority of employment expansion, with seven of the top ten positions on Indeed’s 2026 rankings coming from medical and therapeutic fields.

Cardiac medical tech secured the number one spot with 34% wage growth over three years and a median annual salary of $133,907, followed closely by nurse practitioner at number three, speech language pathologist at number four, and licensed professional counselor, rounding out the top five.

The report notes, “For job seekers in 2026, healthcare isn’t just a top choice on Indeed’s list — it is one of the most reliable foundations for a stable career.”

AI-proof careers: The demand for emotional intelligence

In addition to instant demand, high-ranking jobs require specialized expertise and constant human interaction, which technology cannot easily replicate.

Devon Nelson, a licensed clinical social worker who practices in a hospital setting, stresses that her work is grounded in emotional intelligence

“So much of my job is about the human connection with patients and families,” she said. “This work can’t be done by technology or a robot. It’s about emotional intelligence, not artificial intelligence.”

Occupations such as speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, sign language interpreter, and music therapist are indicative of a broader trend toward specialization in care-based work.

These jobs require highly skilled professionals and are resistant to automation, giving employees a chance to pursue their desired goals and remain employed in a highly uncertain economy.

High-paying jobs without a degree: Certificate programs

While some healthcare careers require extensive education, many positions on the 2026 list offer relatively low barriers to entry.

Sign language interpreter at number 11, radiologic tech at number 18, and massage therapist at number 44 can often be pursued through certificate or associate degree programs, allowing career switchers to enter stable fields more quickly.

Ullrich observes that people typically think of doctors, nurses, or pharmacists when considering healthcare careers, but often miss “other, more niche roles — like cardiac technicians — that have seen serious growth.”

This accessibility matters as workers reassess the return on investment of traditional four-year degrees and seek practical paths to financial stability.

Tech and skilled trade jobs show selective resilience

Beyond healthcare, technology positions demonstrate a more complicated picture of correction rather than collapse.

“Despite a 36% decline in job postings since early 2020, actual employment in computer and mathematical occupations remains nearly 20% higher than pre-pandemic levels,” said Ulrich.

“This indicates that the current slowdown is a structural rebalancing versus a dramatic collapse,” with tech roles remaining essential for long-term digital transformation

Ranked 37th and 43rd, respectively, roles such as ServiceNow developer and full-stack developer now prioritize real-world experience and demonstrated skills over formal credentials alone.

Professions of trade can also be seen in the list; among the top ten jobs are the owner-operator truck driver with a median of $160,000 at the second position, the HVAC technician with 93% posting growth at the 16th position, the journeyperson electrician with 48th position, and the electrical foreman with the 50th position.

These positions are well-paid and do not require a degree, which will attract employees who value stability over flexibility, in a time when on-site services usually enjoy reliable demand.

As automation and economic stagnation reshape the broader landscape, the 2026 job market signals a future where durable careers hinge on irreplaceable human empathy and specialized expertise—particularly in healthcare—while even resilient tech and trade roles increasingly reward demonstrated competency over traditional credentials.
